Environmental sustainability and targets
We are committed to continuously improving the environmental sustainability of our operations, guided by our environmental policy. Efficient material use, optimized production, and resource management, together with our SBTi-aligned targets and emissions reduction roadmap, guide us toward significantly reducing our environmental impact.
At Okmetic, our commitment to the environment guides all our operations. We believe that responsible environmental practices not only support sustainable growth but also create long-term value for our customers, employees, and society. Our environmental policy is built on five core principles:
- Strict regulatory compliance
- Minimizing environmental impacts
- Proactive risk management
- Continuous improvement
- Strong partnerships
Okmetic holds a valid environmental permit, and our operations and products meet or exceed the requirements of environmental legislation and international standards such as ISO 14001.
We actively manage the key environmental impacts of our production, including energy, water, chemical use, and waste generation. Through continuous improvements, we strive to reduce these impacts and promote sustainable practices. Read more in our Sustainability report.
SBTi-aligned emissions reduction roadmap
In 2024, we committed to the globally recognized Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi), supporting ambitious climate action and the transition to a net-zero economy.
We have set an SBTi-aligned target and established a clear roadmap to reduce our Scope 1&2 emissions covering direct emissions and purchased energy by 90% by 2030, using 2022 as the baseline. In addition, we will define Scope 3 (indirect emissions) reduction target in line with the SBTi by the first half of 2026 to further strengthen our climate strategy.

The majority of Scope 1&2 emissions come from electricity use. In 2024, almost 50% of the electricity used was CO2-neutral nuclear power, and in 2025, 80% is generated from renewable hydropower.
Total Emissions Declined by 13% and Scope 1&2 Emissions by 29%
In 2024, our emissions decreased by 13% to 49,870 tCO2e compared to 2023. Our carbon footprint calculations cover the entire Okmetic Group operations and are conducted in line with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG Protocol). The 2024 emissions distribution is the following:
- Scope 1&2 – Direct emissions and purchased energy: 14,502 tCO2e (20,489 tCO2e in 2023)
- Scope 3 – Indirect emissions: 35,368 tCO2e (36,303 tCO2e in 2023), not including category 10 processing of sold products.

Environmental policy and certifications guide our operations
We use quality and environmental systems compliant with ISO 9001:2015, ISO 14001:2015 and IATF 16949:2016 standards, and we require ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 certification even from our most significant contract manufacturers and suppliers.
We are audited by external partners every four years in accordance with the EU Energy Efficiency Directive (2023/1791). Our approach is recognized as ISO 50001-aligned under the EU directive.
Additionally, our operations fulfill the requirements of the REACH regulation, RoHS directive, and the Global Automotive Declarable Substance List (GADSL).
We develop the environmental sustainability of our products and operations by also utilizing the results of customer audits.
We manage environmental risks under the entire company’s overarching operations as well as individual processes. Preventive planning is an important aspect in the management of environmental risks.
Optimizing raw materials, energy and water consumption
Our goal is to optimize the consumption of raw materials, energy, and water in relation to production volume through efficient production and continuous improvement.
The use of polysilicon has been identified as a significant environmental factor in our operations. We strive to minimize the amount of polysilicon that ends up as waste by optimizing crystal growing processes. In addition, we produce recycled silicon from the unused parts of silicon crystals, which we can still utilize in our production, and a significant portion of the silicon waste is being recycled by our partner. In 2024, nearly 35% of silicon waste was recycled.
In addition to materials efficiency, we also focus on responsible water use in our production. A study conducted in 2022 helped us identify areas where water consumption could be reduced. In response, we began implementing water-saving measures in 2023 and continued these efforts in 2024. As a result, we saved 4,400 m³ of purified DI water in 2024—reducing both water and energy consumption. New measures to save water will be investigated in 2025.
We are prepared for the upcoming sustainability reporting in accordance with the CSRD directive
In 2024, we prepared for future reporting in accordance with the EU CSRD (Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive) by conducting a double materiality assessment and defining the material topics to be reported.
Regulatory changes that have not yet been confirmed at the time of publishing the report may postpone Okmetic’s reporting obligation until 2027. We monitor the development of regulations and are prepared to develop our reporting practices with the aim of achieving an operating method in accordance with the existing and final CSRD regulations.
