Okmetic has reduced Scope 1 & 2 emissions by 54%

Okmetic’s 2025 Sustainability Report, including emissions calculations, has been published, underscoring our commitment to sustainability. The year 2025 was defined by the commissioning and ramp‑up of our new Vantaa fab expansion, a major milestone in Okmetic’s long‑term growth. The fab expansion is reflected in Okmetic’s emissions profile primarily through higher Scope 3 emissions related to capital investments.

In 2024, we committed to the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) and established a clear roadmap to reduce our Scope 1 and 2 emissions. The report also highlights significant progress in reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions. Our aim is to cut emissions from direct operations and purchased energy by 90% by 2030. We will define an SBTi‑aligned Scope 3 emissions reduction target by the first half of 2026.

Electricity mix as a key driver in reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions

In 2025, our Scope 1 and 2 emissions declined by 54% compared to the 2022 baseline, despite a significant increase in energy consumption driven by the fab expansion.

Electricity consumption accounts for most of these emissions. In 2024, nearly 50% of our electricity was carbon neutral, and in 2025 this share increased to 80% through the purchase of renewable hydropower. The remaining 20% consists of market‑based electricity from Finland’s overall power generation mix. In Finland, approximately 56% of electricity production comes from renewable energy sources, 40% from nuclear power, with the remainder generated from fossil fuels.

Energy consumption increased while emissions declined

Electricity and district heating consumption increased in 2025 due to increased production following the fab expansion. Despite this, Scope 1 and 2 emissions decreased, demonstrating the impact of lower-carbon energy sources.

Fab expansion ramp‑up reflected in 2025 total emissions

In 2025, Okmetic’s total greenhouse gas emissions (Scope 1, 2 and 3) increased compared to previous years, primarily due to higher Scope 3 emissions (indirect emissions). The increase was driven by significant investments in capital goods related to the commissioning of the Vantaa fab expansion.

While these investments increased total emissions in the reporting year, they support long term growth and are designed to improve resource and energy efficiency per unit of production as volumes scale. Environmental considerations were embedded throughout the planning and implementation of the fab expansion, including energy-recycling solutions such as waste heat recovery and near energy self-sufficiency in heating and cooling. As production capacity increases, energy and water use relative to output is expected to develop positively.

We will define Scope 3 reduction target in line with the SBTi by the first half of 2026 to further strengthen our climate strategy. Achieving accurate Scope 3 emissions calculations requires input from our customers and partners, and we appreciate your collaboration in ensuring comprehensive and reliable data as we continue to advance our climate strategy
